This page provides some background information about Ningileri Thayillath family and how it became one of the four Thavazhis of Ningileri Tharavad.
The origin of Ningileri Tharavad can be traced back to Kuttiady, a place 40 km away and located at the southern border area of the famous Kottayam Kingdom. Situated 2 km west of Kuttiady is a place called Narikkot chal, which was the locale of the famous Akkilat Tharavad during 1800. When the population of men started increasing immensely in this Tharavad they adopted one girl from Poothedath Tharavad of Vellamunda, Wyanad, to maintain the female lineage as per the prevailing marumakkathayam system.
Akkilat Chinnan Nambiar was a famous and courageous warlord. He married Kunhimakkam Amma of Perat Tharavad, another well-known family in Kuttiady. They had three children - one boy and two girls. Kunhimakkam Amma’s brother was Kunhikutty Nambiar.
Chinnan Nambiar, aka Valiachinnan Nambiar, helped Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja fight the British. Pazhassi Raja of the Padinajare Kovilakom of the Kottayam family had his palace at Pazhassi and he had a heroic death in November 1805. After his passing away, Chinnan Nambiar was taken captive by the British and later hanged.
Following the demise of Chinnan Nambiar, his wife Kunhimakkam Amma left Narikkot chal and went to Cheruvancheri, near Panoor along with her brother Kunhikutty Nambiar and her three children. The place where they stayed in Cheruvancheri is called Kavumkandy Paramba.
Kunhikutty Nambiar got his two nieces, children of Kunhimakkam Amma, married off to the then famous families of Kottayam Kingdom (Kottayam Thampuran) and Chengat Tharavad (Govindan Nambiar). Subsequently Kunhikutty Nambiar, along with sister Kunhimakkam Amma, left Cheruvancheri and settled down in Kuthuparamba. They built a small house there and named it Ningileri, probably in memory of Chinnan Nambiar’s military base by name Nishkalangapuri. This house was later expanded to a huge mansion based on Ettukettu architecture. This became the Ningileri Tharavad Veedu.
The roots of Ningileri Tharavad is displayed in the following family tree diagram. The timelines of the different generations are shown on the extreme left of the diagram.
The diagram shows how the four granddaughters of Kunhimakkam Amma gave rise to the four Thavazhis of Ningileri Tharavad, namely Ningileri Madham, Ningileri Thayillam, Ningileri Ponneduthaparamba and Ningileri itself. The descendants of these Thavazhis use the initials NM, NT, NP, and N respectively as part of their family names to indicate their family lineage.
